Hyperglycemia (High Blood Glucose)

What is Hyperglycemia?
Hyperglycaemia is the cause of the typical signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus such as polyuria, thirst, weight loss, fatigue, poor wound healing ability, etc. Higher blood glucose levels results in the removal of blood glucose in the urine. This is called glycosuria . Glycosuria impairs the ability of the kidneys to retain water and causes excessive loss of water through urine. Hence, thirst develops together with polyuria. Loss of glucose is a loss of energy fuel. When the amount of energy fuel available becomes less than the energy demands of the body, fatigue and weight loss develop. Patients with poorly or untreated diabetes have poor wound healing capability. High glucose content in the tissue fluid is a good medium for bacteria growth. The severity of these signs and symptoms correlates to the degree of hyperglycaemia.
